In the old days, fortresses were built in all regions of Macau for military purpose and for securing the safety of this piece of land. Among all places in China, Macau used to be one with the highest number as well as the most densely distributed fortresses. Nowadays most of the fortresses have been dismantled or rebuilt while the rest has become ancient landmarks of Macau.
There was neither unique design for fortresses in Macau, nor was there specific designation for the number of fortresses constructed. Fortresses at different locations functioned as part of a military defending network with their different focus points and cannon distances. Aside from cannons, there are barracks, magazines, etc, on the fortresses.
Fortresses are constructed from clay, clay, haulm, calcareousness and oyster shells, etc. It is said that these fortresses are strong enough to withstand the attacks of cannon bombs. Moreover, these fortresses serve another purpose, for sailors and businessmen to stay over after long traveling journey from Europe to Macau.
Today, there is only a small number of fortresses existing but they are without any value for military stratagem. They have become famous scenic spots or other service facilities. For instance, Taipa Fortress was changed into Police Station, a five star hotel was built on A-Ma Fortress; Mong Ha Fortress has become the address of a tourism studies institute, whereas Mount Fortress and Guia Fortress become famous tourist attractions and scenic spots.
