In 1557, Macau began to develop; the Portuguese established their first beachhead along the coast of China and Macau was turned into a trade & business center. At the same time, Macau also became the gate for spreading Christianity. Simple churches made from wood and raw matting were founded by the priests who first came to Macau. At the later stage, from 17th century onwards, bigger churches were mainly made from stones, cement and plaster.
The churches in Macau were mostly constructed in Baroque style and they blended with characteristics of the oriental and tropical styles. Windows with tiles, terra cottas and Chinese graphics are common in these constructions. The churches suffered severe destruction by natural disasters through hundreds of years; now most of them had been renovated or refurbished. Many historic churches, such as the Cathedral, St. Lawrence’s church, St. Anthony, St. Dominic’s Church and St. Lazarus are still grand and elegant. Among them the most famous one is Ruins of S. Paul’s, which is the key tourist attraction in Macau.
